You can find popular newspaper and/or magazine articles on education topics through the library's databases or the internet. It is strongly recommended, however, that you start with our databases, as you will not hit the paywall blocks that many publishers include on their web sites. Consider using the links below to begin your research should you decide to use popular articles as a source.
ProQuest Newspapers - College database that searches current and historical holdings for 5 major national newspapers.
MasterFILE - EBSCO database that includes magazines and other periodicals written for a general audience.
Maryland Department of Education - The MSDE offers its own in-house news service.
Maryland State Educators Association - The MSEA provides coverage of certain "hot topics".
Google News - Not recommended as a starting place given breadth of coverage. However, this link will provide far more helpful and convenient results than "regular Google."
You are also allowed to use scholarly articles for this assignment. If you do not understand the difference between scholarly and popular articles, please see page 2 of the Evaluating Information Sources document. Scholarly articles are written by and for scholars, subject to review by experts, feature highly technical and scientific topics, and focus primarily on written research. Please contact a librarian if you are experiencing any issues determining whether or not a source is scholarly. The databases listed below are the most likely to return high-quality, scholarly education articles. Be sure to take advantage of advanced search features! EBSCO's limiters and ProQuest's limiters are found on the main search screens, although you must navigate to the Advanced Search screen to limit by date in ProQuest.
Newscasts are audiovisual broadcasts of news reports. CCC does not have access to newscasts through our databases, so please consider some of the suggested sites below.
NBC News – The “Top Education Videos” section may be particularly helpful.
Education Week – Organized by broad category on left-hand side of the screen.
NPR – Newscasts are sometimes mixed in with opinion pieces, so browse with caution.
US News – Typically only covers major national stories, but also features terrific investigative pieces.
There are also a large number of high-quality education videos (NOT newscasts) available in our Films on Demand database.
