A guide to resources for early childhood education and child development

Determining the best language for searching will result in the best search results.

Search research databases with subject headings to find whole articles about your topic.  Always pay attention to the subject headings in the best articles located.  Search with that language.

The best subject headings for the topic of parental involvement or participation are:

  • parent participation
  • family involvement (ERIC only)
    • family involvement is not a subject heading in the Proquest Education database--search it only as a keyword or title phrase there
  • parents
  • parenting
    • Truncate the word parent* to find that word and all of its endings or any subject heading that includes the word
  • parent school relationship (ERIC)
  • parent teacher cooperation (ERIC)
  • family school relationship (ERIC)
  • academic achievement
  • learning
  • schools (secondary, elementary, public)
  • teachers
  • educators

Create searches using the subject phrase parent participation or parent* paired with some of the other subject headings above relating to success/achievement.
