Nutrition and Weight Management Project APA Guide

Web sites

NOTE: Resources on periodical web sites, such as People and Timeshould be cited using the examples on the Citing Articles tab.

To cite web sites, you must first determine whether an author/authors are credited. If so, you should use the "Individual webpage on a website, with author" template on page 5 of our APA Style Guide. If no author is credited, you should use either the organizational website or government agency website as appropriate. Here are some tips for creating accurate web site citations:

  • Include the month and day in the citation if they are provided in the article, such as (2024, March) or (2024, March 6).
  • If no date is included, use the abbreviation n.d. (e.g., (Krzanowski, n.d.))
  • If the organizational/government author name is the same as the web site name (e.g., the Carroll Community College homepage), you can omit the web site title from the citation. Simply include the italicized article title and then paste the direct URL.
  • Government authors must include a parent agency if one is listed. For example, the author of this website would be listed as the Drug Enforcement Administration, while the parent agency (United States Department of Justice) would be listed after the italicized title and before the URL.
  • Take care not to list editors as authors. If an individual author is not specifically credited, cite as an organizational or government web site.
  • Your in-text citation should begin with either the individual author's name or the authoring agency's, but not any credited editors.
