Information Literacy Guide: Tools for Faculty

A guide to support faculty in incorporating General Education Learning Goal #4 into the curriculum.

Instructional Strategies Team Recommendations

A team consisting of instructors who provided information literacy artifacts, information literacy rubric developers, and the original Gen Ed scoring team was formed and met in the fall of 2012.  The team discussed the results of the artifact scoring for Gen Ed Learning Goal #4 (Information and Technology Literacy), observations made by the scoring and rubric development teams, and considered what intervention would best improve student learning.

Working in small discussion groups, the team came up with ideas and was able to reach consensus on employing the following strategies and tools in the Spring semester of 2013:

  1. Develop a short pre-assessment tool to assess student skills in accessing resources.
  2. Develop a set of written assignment guidelines for instructors to use to assist students in effectively accessing resources.
  3. Create a research log as tool for students to document the process used to identify resources.  This log will be included with the artifacts.
  4. Assign some additional value to the research process used by the student in the final assessment of the assignment.

Artifacts were collected and evaluated at the end of the spring term. The team found that Information Literacy results were improved with the use of these strategies/tools.

It is suggested that these tools/resources be utilized by faculty to strengthen information literacy across the curriculum.
